Vegan MoFo : Day 6 : Vegetable Garden

Saturday afternoon, my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, nephew (although at only six weeks old, he didn’t eat much), and I went to Vegetable Garden for a little belated birthday celebration.

Located in a strip mall near White Flint Metro in Rockville, MD, Vegetable Garden has been open for nearly a decade. I believe their menu is completely vegan, and most of the food is Asian. There are lots of combinations I’ve never seen on other Chinese-American menus, though.

There are lots of mock meats, although a while ago, they switched to strictly U.S. and house-made products. There are a few lunch and dinner specials, where you can get soup, a spring or fresh vegetable roll, and either one or two small portions of a selection of entrees. My favorite thing to order is the Super Combo, which allows you to choose any soup (I always get the deliciously savory lentil), a fried or fresh roll, and larger portions of any two entrees for $16.99. I usually get at least two meals out of the combo, so it’s a pretty good deal.

Saturday, the three of us decided to share orders of fresh and fried veggie rolls, and two entrees. They also bring carrot bread to the table. It’s kind of bland, but I like it.

The fresh vegetable roll is filled with fresh shredded veggies, cilantro, and a little tofu. It’s wrapped in a soft crepe instead of chewy rice paper.

The fried spring roll is pretty much what you’d expect. Nothing special, but reliable for less adventurous eaters.

I always seem to order the Veggie Beef with Yams and Pecans. It’s in a mildly sweet sauce, and served with a medley of spaghetti squash, shredded carrots, and dried cranberries. It has sort a holiday flavor to it, which might be why I like it so much.

We also ordered the Eight Treasure Eggplant. It has bits of battered and fried tofu mixed with squash and other veggies. Eggplant isn’t exactly my favorite vegetable, but this dish is really delicious.

Vegetable Garden also has a frequent diner program. You get a stamp for every $10 you spend, and once you spend $100, you get $10 off your next meal.

That’s it for now, see you tomorrow!
